Chapter 97.2: Passed the Exam
That evening, Chu Qianmiao felt dizzy from working on her
application. She decided to get up and go downstairs for some fresh air, or
even go straight to dinner.
As soon as she left the conference room, Ren Yan followed.
She slowly descended the stairs on one side, while Ren Yan quickly descended
the other.
When she reached the entrance of Rongda University, she saw
Ren Yan, who had also arrived.
It was such a coincidence that they met.
Then Ren Yan said to her, "Let's go get something to
eat and then come back to continue the application."
She was really hungry, so without thinking, she followed
him.
He took her to a nearby restaurant and asked if they had
noodles. The owner said yes. He ordered her a bowl of noodles and asked the
owner to add a poached egg.
As she ate her noodles, she could feel his constant gaze. It
burned her scalp, so she raised her head, met his gaze head-on, and asked,
"Boss, is there something dirty on my head?"
She saw him smile.
With that same smirk, he asked, "The exam's coming up.
How's your review going?"
She almost lost her appetite. This scoundrel, why did he
pick the time to bring up these indigestion-inducing things?
"After this meal, squeeze in some time to review. Once
the materials are submitted, you'll have to take the exam. You have to pass,
you know."
""
Not only does it make you indigestion, it also makes you
nervous and want to vomit.
She saw him stand up as he spoke, shoving his hands into his
trouser pockets and looking down at her condescendingly. She tilted her head
back to meet his gaze. Later, she thought, she must have looked foolish, her
mouth still stained with the greasy liquid from the hot noodle soup, her mouth
half-open from tilting her head back, her eyes fixed on him, unblinking.
He looked down at her, a quirky smile on his face, and said,
"You must pass the exam. Don't let me down with this bowl of longevity
noodles I took you for."
With that, he walked out of the shop, saying, "I can't
be away for long. I'm going back now. Take your time eating. You can come back
after you're done."
She stood there, stunned, holding her chopsticks, as
alternating currents of heat and cold shot up her spine and into the back of
her head. Goosebumps formed on her arms. Her eyes alternated between dry and
hot.
She wondered why he was like this.
She'd even forgotten her birthday, so why would he remember
it?
She thought he was truly annoying.
As the weather gradually cooled, Li Ya's IPO project
completed its filing as scheduled.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission accepted the
filing materials, and everyone involved in the project breathed a sigh of
relief.
They could all take a good rest.
But Chu Qianmiao was the only one.
After returning from Rongda, she didn't even bother to
reflect on the Liya project, instead burying herself in her review materials
day and night.
During the day, Liu Lifeng's face turned pale when he saw
her studying. "Do you really want to be my big brother?"
Chu Qianmiao nodded and told him, "I've prepared a
kneeling cushion for you. I promise your knees won't hurt when you kneel and
kowtow to me."
Liu Lifeng ignored her until just before the exam, also
burying himself in his review materials.
Lately, Chu Qianmiao hadn't left work after work, staying at
the company to read. Cramming the subway during rush hour is a patient
endeavor. Trains arrive one after another, and once the doors open, not only do
people get on, but everyone else on board almost spills out. So she had to wait
for each train, and by the time she finally had a chance to squeeze in, half an
hour had already passed. Chu Qianmiao didn't want to waste this waiting time.
From one day on, after get off work, she noticed that Ren
Yan wasn't in a hurry to leave.
And it didn't begin until someday, when Ren Yan, who wasn't
in a hurry to leave after get off work, would call her into his office and ask,
"Is there anything you don't understand?"
At first, she was hesitant to ask him. Then, she thought,
damn it, she was so talented now, only Ren Yan could tutor her. So, she decided
to ask him.
So, gradually, every evening after get off work, Ren Yan,
who wasn't leaving, would tutor her. Sometimes, she even got to eat dinner with
him.
She wondered what kind of life this was. Employees were
taking exams, and the boss was guaranteeing them everything, including meals.
The day before the exam, Ren Yan called her into his office
and told her, "Don't stress, don't be nervous."
She nodded and said yes.
Ren Yan then said, "You must pass this time,
understand?"
"..."
She wondered why Ren Yan, with his astronomical IQ, would
lose his logic whenever he had anything to do with the insurance agent exam.
She entered the exam room with this conflicting message.
This time, she felt great, even better than when she took the college entrance
exam. She didn't get a heat stroke, wasn't nervous, didn't vomit, and didn't
have a stomachache.
After leaving the exam room, she felt reassured.
As soon as she got home, she organized all her review
materials and put them in a cardboard box. She figured if Liu Lifeng needed
them, she'd give them to him, and if he didn't, she'd give them to Yan
Yunqiang.
Then, on the day the results were released, Ren Yan emerged
from his office and walked into the work area. He had his hands in his trouser
pockets, looking relaxed and at ease.
He still asked Liu Lifeng, "How are your grades?"
Liu Lifeng lowered his head and shook his head.
Ren Yan didn't ask him any more questions. He turned to Chu
Qianmiao and asked, "How are you?"
Chu Qianmiao slowly raised her head, a troubled expression
on her face. She saw Ren Yan frown, and she could almost see the sinking of his
heart in his eyes. His relaxed, carefree aura seemed to freeze.
Chu Qianmiao was almost startled. She hadn't realized her
pass/fail result was so different from Liu Lifeng's. It felt as if if she'd
waited for a "fail," that result would immediately pierce Ren Yan's
heart.
She immediately stopped keeping him in suspense and quickly
said, "Boss, I passed."
She heard Liu Lifeng's head bang against the table.
She saw a sudden, different light flash in Ren Yan's eyes.
He looked directly at her and said, "Okay."
Then he immediately pulled his hands out of his trouser
pockets, clapped them together, and announced, "Everyone, let me say a few
words."
Everyone at their workstations looked up at him.
"Qin Qianyu passed the insurance agent exam before, but
we were all busy working on the project and didn't get to celebrate. Now Chu
Qianmiao has passed too, so let's celebrate together tonight. Xiao Qin,"
he instructed, looking at Qin Qianyu, "pick a place you both like to go,
book a room, and have dinner together tonight."
This time, Qin Qianyu didn't forget to ask, "Boss, are
you coming tonight?"
Ren Yan nodded, "Me too."
Qin Qianyu immediately beamed. But then he remembered
something, his expression changing. He quickly asked, "Boss, are you
bringing Moutai tonight?"
Ren Yan turned to Chu Qianmiao and asked, "Do you
drink?"
Chu Qianmiao was startled. "Ah!"
Why ask her that?
"No, no."
Ren Yan told Qin Qianyu, "Then let's not drink."
Qin Qianyu was like a death row inmate who had received a
sentence.
Like an amnesty after autumn, he sighed deeply. If he drinks
six more bottles, he'll die a heroic death.
The author has something to say to Ren
Yan: Emma, little girl, if you keep scaring me like that, I'll pin you to the
wall, to the sink, to the desk, to the door, and so on. Is Ren Yan driving?
Emma, this innocent author is mortified.
