Chapter 16
“Taking you home is no problem,
but,” Lin Yusen said hesitantly, “would you like to say hello to the teachers?”
I stiffened in his arms for a few
seconds, then peeked out. Three old men were smiling at us.
On the way back, Lin Yusen
cheerfully introduced me to the background of these old men. Hmm, I met three
of those old men—usually it takes a long time to meet them.
Upon hearing that one of them was
a leading authority in neurosurgery in Beijing, I immediately became alert:
“You’re not going to Beijing, are you? No way, it’s too far!”
Lin Yusen laughed: “No, no.”
I felt I was being a bit too
much. How could I interfere with his career prospects? Even if he was my
boyfriend, it wasn’t right. So, I reluctantly added, “If the opportunity is
particularly good, I might consider it.”
“Oh? Then what about you?”
What else could I do?
I declared with an air of
righteous indignation, "I'll work here to support your trip to
Beijing."
Lin Yusen: "...Thank
you."
"You're welcome. So, are you
planning to go back to university to do research?"
"My professor just
introduced me to him."
Even though it was just
"just," my imagination was already running wild... Lin Yusen in his
white lab coat, conducting experiments; Professor Lin lecturing on the
university podium...
"I think it's great," I
affirmed emphatically. "You'd be so handsome as a researcher or professor.
I could sneak into his classes..."
From a medical student who was
all the rage in the medical school, as described by Senior Su, to a professor
who was all the rage in the medical school, and this person is my boyfriend...
Wow~ just thinking about it makes my vanity explode.
I was lost in thought for a
moment, and I didn't quite catch what Lin Yusen said. After several seconds, I
asked him, "What did you just say?"
Lin Yusen sighed: "I said,
speaking of handsome, I have a video, arguably the most handsome moment of my
life. Do you want to watch it with me?"
Of course!
Encouraged by my attitude, Lin
Yusen even sped up a bit. When we arrived at his house, he led me straight to
his study, turned on the computer, and opened a video.
Then I was stunned.
All the way there, I kept
thinking about what his most impressive moment would be—a student
representative speech? His doctoral graduation? Or some event he'd participated
in?
I never expected it to be a
surgical recording, and a rather gory one at that…
Lin Yusen quickly closed it,
“Wrong one, this is the middle one.”
As he spoke, he moved the mouse
to click on another video in the folder.
"Wait a minute!" I
noticed about seven or eight videos in the folder and asked warily, "Are
all these surgical recordings?"
"Yes, they're from the same
surgery. It's quite long, so it's been split into several videos."
"How long?"
"Almost ten hours."
I clapped first: "Wow,
amazing!"
Then I lowered my hands and
stated seriously, "Can we just watch the ending?"
Lin Yusen: "..."
I encouraged him: "The
moment you walk off the operating table, I think that'll be incredibly
cool."
"For that, you can watch the
beginning too, it's a pre-operative rehearsal. You just want to see the person,
right? Xiguang, why are you like this?"
Me: "..."
Is it wrong that I don't want to
see blood vessels and brain tissue?!
He shook his head and sighed,
clicking on the first segment. The opening scene was a stunning profile shot of
Dr. Lin in his white coat. He was probably in the doctor's office, standing in
front of the lightbox displaying MRI scans, talking to the family and other
doctors.
If we disregard his pretentious
act in my hospital room last time, this was the first time I'd truly seen him
as a doctor, and my gaze was completely drawn to this unfamiliar yet
professional figure.
"He's explaining the
surgical approach."
Lin Yusen's expression instantly
calmed, and he slowly explained in my ear, "This is one of the most
successful surgeries I've ever performed; the patient's recovery exceeded
expectations. My teacher mentioned at dinner today that a professor asked me to
send him the video, and I suddenly wanted to see it myself."
"Was this surgery very
difficult? Why was it recorded?"
"It was difficult. The
hospital wanted to record some publicly available images to reduce some medical
fees, and I proactively negotiated with the hospital after obtaining the
patient's consent."
I nodded, and together we
listened quietly to Dr. Lin explaining the surgical approach in the video.
After about ten minutes of the
surgical approach rehearsal, the camera shifted, and Dr. Lin was already
disinfecting his hands, then, with the help of a nurse, changing into a
surgical gown, mask, and gloves.
The video was very detailed,
showing procedures such as checking surgical instruments, and everything was
finished.
“Let’s begin.”
Dr. Lin said calmly in the video,
stepping towards the operating table.
Even though I knew the surgery
was bound to be successful, I still suddenly tensed up. But the moment the
camera panned to the patient’s brain being disinfected, Lin Yusen moved the
mouse and turned off the video!
I immediately turned to Lin
Yusen, who raised an eyebrow: “Didn’t you say you only needed to watch the
beginning and the end?”
That’s what I said… but…
Before I could think of anything
to say, Lin Yusen had already clicked on the last video, scrolling to the end
of the surgery.
“It’s too long. You should go to
sleep early. Watch the end,” Lin Yusen said beside me.
“The field of view is clear. I’m
getting off the microscope,” Dr. Lin said in the video.
At this moment, the handsome Dr.
Lin wasn’t so handsome anymore. Although his tone and hands remained steady,
large beads of sweat covered his forehead, and his voice was dry and hoarse.
Then the camera shifted, and he
walked out of the operating room, explaining the surgery to the elderly
patient’s family. He spoke very conservatively, yet the patient's family was
overjoyed. After a few words, the simply dressed but clean elderly couple even
wept, covering their faces and crying.
"They're not from Shanghai.
They traveled all the way here seeking medical treatment, exhausted and
penniless, so they were very excited after the successful surgery. The patient
is now able to live a normal life. Before the Lunar New Year, I received an
email from him saying his parents were healthy, he was recovering well and
could do some light work, and he'd be able to pay off his debts in two
years."
I felt a pang of sorrow, followed
by relief. I glanced discreetly at Lin Yusen; he was intently watching the
screen, a slight smile on his face as he spoke, unaware of my gaze.
At that moment, the exhausted Dr.
Lin in the video also wore a relaxed smile. He pulled the patient's family down
to sit, gently and patiently answering their questions. He constantly comforted
and reassured them, his eyes and brows radiating the satisfaction of having
given his all.
Suddenly, it dawned on me—was
this the "unparalleled joy of focusing intently and accomplishing
something" he'd told me about?
It must be.
But I'd never seen him so
content, so full of a sense of achievement, at any other time.
My Dr. Lin, once one of the most
dedicated and responsible doctors in the world, can no longer operate, but he's
planning to do something else truly remarkable.
He should return to the medical
field as soon as possible, instead of wasting his time in a place he has no
interest in.
This thought suddenly pierced my
mind.
But I didn't say it aloud,
because it would be pointless. Lin Yusen wouldn't just abandon the company like
that; he would definitely stay until it was fully operational.
That's the kind of responsible
person he is.
But how long will that take? Six
months? A year? What if something else happens that prevents him from leaving?
Sometimes I wonder, what does Lin
Yusen like about me?
It seems he developed feelings
for me after seeing me at my godmother's banquet, and later, because of the car
accident, he developed an obsession.
But isn't this a very weak
foundation?
Although he's incredibly lucky,
and I am indeed quite good, theoretically he should like me more and more.
However, I do have a few minor flaws, like being a little lazy… though that's
not really a flaw… But Lin Yusen is a very ambitious and hardworking person,
the kind who is both talented and hardworking. Will he think I lack ambition
over time?
Although I'm certain he wouldn't
hurt me no matter what, it seems like you can't rely on someone's character in
matters of the heart; that wouldn't be fair to them.
The video was nearing its end;
the last shot was Lin Yusen and the nurses' blurry figures walking away.
Lin Yusen turned off the video
and started packing emails to send to the professor.
I silently watched him work, and
for some reason, a sudden urge to work harder welled up inside me.
It wasn't just because of him,
nor just because I wanted the person around me to do what he wanted to do
sooner; it was also because I myself wanted to become a little bit better.
I want to experience the joy of
giving my all, I want more praise and affirmation, and I want the day Lin Yusen
looks at me with eyes that light up like they do when I see him in the video. I
want to be with someone so radiant, but I don't want him to blind me.
Hmm!
I suddenly stood up: "Lin
Yusen, let's not go to Shanghai tomorrow. Let's go back to Suzhou after
breakfast."
Lin Yusen, who hadn't finished
sending the email, looked at me questioningly: "Didn't we say we were
going to eat at the restaurant your classmate recommended?"
"Next time."
"Why are you in such a hurry
to go back all of a sudden?"
"I have to go back to work
overtime!"
Perhaps my attitude was too firm,
because Lin Yusen became cautious even when making a suggestion, "There's
still time for a meal, isn't there?"
"No, you don't know me. If I
let this momentum carry!"
