Chapter 36.2: You're So Polite
During their review, Chu Qianmiao and Qi Mingheng discovered
that several contracts had been signed without even passing the Legal
Department's review. One of them was the 70 million yuan contract.
Chu Qianmiao and Qi Mingheng went to see Ji Xia and told him
about several contracts that had been signed without legal review.
Ji Xia, twirling a handful of walnuts, smiled and said,
"Oh, that's actually a misunderstanding. As I've said before, the Legal
Department was in turmoil at the time, with constant personnel changes. But I
have to tell you, these contracts weren't unreviewed; they were reviewed by the
former legal director."
"Mr. Ji, the contract review should have been
documented, but there's no record of it now," Qi Mingheng said.
Ji Xia, twirling the walnuts, crackled and said, "Then
you'll have to ask the former legal director."
Chu Qianmiao realized instantly that Ji Xia was shifting the
blame. In this respect, He and Sui Huan were very similar.
Since the former legal director was gone, no matter what Ji
Xia said, there was no evidence to prove it.
"Mr. Ji," Chu Qianmiao called out to Ji Xia. Ji
Xia turned toward her, His eyelids half-drooped, as if not quite serious. He
gave a perfunctory "Hmm?"
"I'll have to trouble you to arrange for someone to
review the engineering department's contracts with me over the next two days.
Make sure there aren't any contracts left out of the legal department's files.
Important contracts need to be disclosed in the prospectus; missing them would
constitute information disclosure non-compliance." Chu Qianmiao said with
a friendly smile.
Ji Xia snorted, "Huh?"
"Lawyer Chu, are you trying to review the contracts?
Are you trying to interrogate me? I don't think that's necessary."
His attitude was clearly uncooperative, and Chu Qianmiao and
Qi Mingheng were unceremoniously escorted from his office.
Chu Qianmiao remembered Ren Yan's words: If a soldier
disobeys, she should go directly to his supervisor. Ji Xia's supervisor was
Dong Lan. Chu Qianmiao discussed with Qi Mingheng and asked him to speak
directly to Dong Lan about the matter. Qi Mingheng, however, tried to smooth
things over: "I've only been here a short time, and Mr. Ji is an old hand
who built the business with the chairman. I don't think it's appropriate for me
to bring this up... How about you, Lawyer Chu, go and do it? It would be better
if your agency did it."
Chu Qianmiao thought, okay, then let their agency do it, and
avoid offending this person.
But it wouldn't work if she did it. She was a small-time
figure, and it wasn't appropriate for her to go.
She had to let Ren Yan talk to Dong Lan; only he had the
weight to speak with her.
She asked Qi Mingheng to return to the legal department
while she rushed back to the due diligence office.
When she entered the room, she didn't see Ren Yan. Qin
Qianyu had clearly told her earlier on WeChat that Ren Yan was coming today.
She quickly turned to ask Qin Qianyu, "Brother Qin, is
President Ren still there?"
Qin Qianyu looked up at her, a puzzled look on his face.
"Didn't President Ren go to the Legal Department to look for you? What's
going on? You two didn't run into each other?"
"…………"
What's going on? She and him had staged a classic Korean
drama scene, so close they seemed to be head-on collisions, only to pass each
other by.
Chu Qianmiao said, "Okay! I'll tell you more later.
I'll go look for him in the Legal Department again!"
By the time Chu Qianmiao rushed back to the Legal
Department, Qi Mingheng had already told Ren Yan everything that had happened
at Ji Xia's place.
When Chu Qianmiao entered the room, Ren Yan was standing
with his back to her, listening to Qi Mingheng.
Her panting and footsteps drew him back.
Ren Yan was already feeling a bit confused on his way to the
Legal Department. He was gripped by a fresh feeling of irritation—he didn't
know how to face Chu Qianmiao, what his first words should be, and what tone to
use. These uncertainties made the irritation grow like bamboo shoots within
him.
But with a belly full of irritation, he arrived at the Legal
Department entrance, took a deep breath, and went inside, but didn't see her.
And then he felt a new kind of irritation. How could she not
be there? Where on earth was she trying to hide from him? And until when? He
had only said a few words to her, so why would she do that?
When he heard Qi Mingheng describe Ji Xia's attitude toward
Chu Qianmiao, he was furious. Could anyone treat his junior schoolmate so
rudely? He immediately thought about what he would say when he met Dong Lan
later, how he would say it, and how he would say it to force Ji Xia's
cooperation.
Qi Mingheng had almost finished talking to him when he heard
footsteps behind him. He knew it was her.
It was strange; he had memorized the pattern of her steps
without realizing it.
Before he turned back, his heart even paused. He thought
that if he met her gaze, he might see feelings of grievance, resentment, and
blame in her eyes and face.
He could easily apologize to those feelings.
But, strangely enough, she acted as if nothing had happened,
greeting him and reporting on her work, as usual.
She was completely professional at work. Smiling, polite,
and concise, with not a single word wasted except for the work details.
How can he put it? She was incredibly polite.
Her politeness made it feel even more like their first
meeting than when they first met.
He thought his words scolding her yesterday had really
offended her.
Ren Yan went to see Dong Lan in person. Afterwards, Dong Lan
met with Ji Xia.
Less than an hour after Ji Xia left Dong Lan's office, all
the contract drafts from the Engineering Department were sent to the Legal
Department. Qi Mingheng said he would update the contract details as soon as
possible and send them to Chu Qianmiao.
Chu Qianmiao thought, Ren Yan's actions were truly
extraordinary; his efficiency and effectiveness were evident to the naked eye.
Before leaving get off work, after replying to Qi Mingheng's
email, she looked up and politely said, "Thank you, Mr. Ren."
She saw that Ren Yan seemed hesitant to speak.
She stood up, put on her coat, picked up her bag, and said
politely, "Goodbye, Mr. Ren."
On the subway, she thought about the constipated look on Ren
Yan's face after she had said thank you and goodbye, and she felt a strange
sense of relief.
She would make sure he died of her politeness from now on.
