Chapter 35.3: The Second Tears
Over the weekend, the company and all the intermediary
agencies gathered in the brand-new first conference room for a meeting.
The new conference room had been renovated and decorated
like a five-star hotel. The long, elegant conference table was lined with
expensive black leather chairs. A riot of flowers filled the center. Fruit
plates were placed every two people on the table, and each participant had a
corresponding desktop microphone.
This whole scene immediately set the tone for the upcoming
meeting tense and serious.
When Chu Qianmiao entered the conference room, many people
were already there. Zhang Teng didn't come today. It just so happened that
Cheng Xiaodong's thorny project also had a meeting today. There were a bunch of
demons and demons involved, so Zhang Teng had to go and keep things under
control. Zhang Teng had already informed Ren Yan yesterday, and when he called
Ren Yan, Chu Qianmiao was sitting across from him.
Chu Qianmiao heard everything Zhang Teng said clearly
through Ren Yan's iPhone receiver—as she listened, she wondered how such an
expensive phone could leak so much. She figured Apple phones were the worst at
keeping conversations private.
She heard Zhang Teng say that Cheng Xiaodong's meeting
started earlier than Jia Leyuan's, and if time allowed, he'd take a taxi as
soon as possible. He also hoped Ren Yan would help him with a stop at Dong
Lan's while he was away.
Ren Yan agreed, no problem, and then added that Lawyer Chu
should be able to handle the legal aspects.
Chu Qianmiao felt so elated by this that her arms felt like
wings sprouting from their wings.
Ren Yan then glanced at her coldly and said, "Prepare
carefully and don't offend me and Lawyer Zhang."
She instantly lost her second cosmic velocity and was
dragged back to the ground by gravity.
Chu Qianmiao had just put down her computer in the
conference room when her phone vibrated. It was Zhou Shuqi calling. She hung up
and texted Zhou Shuqi, "I'm getting ready for the meeting."
Zhou Shuqi also sent her a message: "Senior, hurry up,
answer the phone! Lawyer Zhang wants to talk to you about something!"
Chu Qianmiao checked her watch. The meeting was still
fifteen minutes away. She stood up and left the conference room to answer Zhou
Shuqi's call.
As soon as the call rang, Zhou Shuqi excitedly started
bawling, "Wow, senior, you really should come and experience Lawyer
Cheng's project. There are so many twists and turns on this project!!! Just
now, our good-natured Lawyer Zhang Teng got so mad at that weird accountant
that he lost his temper!"
Chu Qianmiao was also surprised to hear that Zhang Teng had
lost his temper, and she immediately asked what was going on.
Zhou Shuqi said, "You have a meeting soon, so let me
briefly explain. The whole thing started because the company's CFO started to
stir up trouble, saying that Attorney Cheng was unprofessional. Attorney Cheng
replied, 'You're in finance, you can't judge me. You need to let your legal
department talk to me.'"
"But the legal department was arguing with the
accountant, and the argument went on and on, driving the accountant crazy. The
accountant first scolded the legal department away, then made the female
brokerage representative cry. Not satisfied yet, she started bashing us
lawyers. She even lectured Attorney Cheng, and she was incredibly
lecturing!"
Chu Qianmiao had heard Cheng Xiaodong complain to her early
in the morning about the accountant on her project, who was incredibly
troublesome, yet also a teacher. She was so eager to teach others every day,
even more arrogant than the brokerage representative. The most terrifying thing
is that people who like to teach others don't usually think they're being a
teacher. They always think they know more, so they're always finding fault with
others. If someone disagrees with their criticism, they'll start a fight.
"You know, our lawyer Zhang is the most protective of
his protégé. As soon as the accountant started lecturing Lawyer Cheng, Lawyer
Zhang exploded. He couldn't stand it anymore and started arguing back at the
accountant, along with Lawyer Cheng, driving him so mad he threw a cup! They
worked so well together, and I was able to do my bit right there!" Zhou
Shuqi said proudly.
At this point, he asked Chu Qianmiao, "The accountants
on this project are all incredibly dedicated, and each one loves to lecture
others. Senior, do you think all accountants are like that?"
Chu Qianmiao immediately said, "Don't talk nonsense,
don't be so blatant. The accountant on our project is very good. You've met an
oddball. There are lawyers out there who are particularly admonishing!"
For example, Qiao Zhixin, the guy at the firm who grinned mischievously
whenever he saw her.
Zhou Shuqi sighed, "Oh, I just find people like that so
annoying!"
Chu Qianmiao hated them, too. When people feel good about
themselves, it's inevitable that they love to lecture others. When something
comes up, someone will offer encouragement first, but he'll criticize you, find
fault with you, and lecture you. How else can he demonstrate his superiority?
Such people are truly annoying, but Chu Qianmiao has discovered through work
that they're everywhere, and it's hard to dislike them enough. It's not worth
getting too serious with them; just laugh it off and treat them as a passing
breeze.
"You said a lot, but what's the point? Hurry, I have to
get back to the meeting!"
Zhou Shuqi quickly said, "Oh, oh, oh, the point is,
Lawyer Zhang asked me to tell you that he can't make it to Jia Leyuan's meeting
today, so you're supposed to hold the fort. Go for it!"
Chu Qianmiao said she got it, then asked Zhou Shuqi,
"Where's Lawyer Zhang now? Are they still arguing? He's a nice guy, but
he's a lot less of a tantrum than you are. If he's still arguing, go back and
help!"
Zhou Shuqi said, "Oh, Lawyer Zhang has been summoned to
the company chairman's office to be coaxed. Don't worry, Senior Sister. Lawyer
Zhang doesn't usually like to argue, but when he gets into an argument, he's
incredibly fierce. The way he was protecting his protégé just now had me dazed
and my eyes filled with tears. I thought, if I were a woman, I'd switch my
feelings and marry him!"
Chu Qianmiao couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"He's already married, thank you!"
Zhou Shuqi continued to daydream, "Ah? So, then I'll
marry him before he gets married!"
Chu Qianmiao: "…………………………"
She didn't think there was anything wrong with the little
rascal's logic. Thinking of this, she couldn't help but laugh again.
A voice interrupted her, its voice cold and tinged with
anger: "Chu Qianmiao, didn't you know the meeting was about to start? If
you want to make some jokes, could you please find another time?"
Chu Qianmiao quickly hung up the phone. She looked back and
saw Ren Yan standing outside the conference room door, facing her. His
expressionless face looked as if he'd been frozen in time at the North Pole.
"Have all the meeting materials been prepared and
verified?" the voice said coldly.
Chu Qianmiao shuddered and replied, "Yes, I've prepared
them and verified them." She hurried into the conference room.
***
Gu Miaoyu returned home to find Chu Qianmiao sniffling
non-stop. Tissues were scattered all over the floor. Gu Miaoyu deduced that Chu
Qianmiao was crying! Gu Miaoyu was terrified.
She remembered the last time Chu Qianmiao cried was a few
years ago. It seemed like she'd failed to deliver a love letter to a senior,
and she felt humiliated and burst into tears. After she finished crying, she
heartlessly stopped being his fan. She hadn't cried since then.
But what happened today???
Gu Miaoyu quickly put her things down and scooted over to
Chu Qianmiao. She asked in a soft, cautious voice, "Shuishui, what's
wrong? Why are you crying?"
Chu Qianmiao pulled out another piece of tissue and blew her nose. With a thick nasal voice, she said stubbornly, "I'm not crying. Who
is crying? Whoever cries is a donkey!"
Gu Miaoyu sighed, "Just admit you're a donkey! Come on,
tell me, what exactly caused you to cry and turn into a donkey?"
Chu Qianmiao sniffed hard and said, "Ren Yan scolded
me."
Gu Miaoyu jumped up from the sofa and said, "I'm going
to fight him. Why should he scold you?"
Chu Qianmiao pulled her back and sniffled, "Forget it,
this time it's my own fault. Before today's intermediary coordination meeting,
Zhou Shuqi called me and said that Attorney Zhang wanted to tell me something.
I chatted with him for a few more minutes while I was out answering the phone,
and that's when Ren Yan rushed out and asked if I had all the materials ready.
I said I had. It turns out there's a construction contract missing from my due
diligence documents. It's for a renovation project that Jialeyuan is doing for
a company, for 70 million yuan. It had just been completed, and Jialeyuan's new
legal officer didn't contact me in time. But somehow, Ren Yan got hold of that
contract in no time. He brought it up during the meeting, but I didn't react. Plus,
our Attorney Zhang wasn't there, so the chairman of Jialeyuan wasn't happy
about it, so she used the opportunity to question our agency's
capabilities."
After the meeting, Ren Yan sternly reprimanded her, telling
her not to spend work hours chatting and joking with men on the phone; work
time is for work.
He scolded her in the due diligence office. She was upset at
the time, but she held back her tears. But once she got home, she couldn't hold
them back any longer. Tears flowed from her body, seemingly uncontrollably.
She and Gu Miaoyu had actually agreed that they would both
be strong and not cry easily. Whoever cried would end up washing the other's
feet for the rest of their lives.
But today, for some reason, he insulted her so much that she
felt hurt. He'd also insulted her about the Hanhai Home Textiles prospectus,
and back then, it was her pride that was hurt. But this time, it seemed as if
her pride was hurt as well as her heart.
She sniffled, wondering if something had changed in her
mental state.
After a daytime meeting, Ren Yan returned to the due
diligence office. After scolding Chu Qianmiao, Qin Qianyu took advantage of Chu
Qianmiao's absence to ask Ren Yan weakly, "Boss, weren't you a little too
harsh just now? I think the contract issue isn't Qianmiao's fault so much as it
is the company's new legal department's... As for President Dong's attitude,
she lost face in front of the lawyers during the previous meeting, and she's
probably trying to make amends this time..."
Ren Yan listened to Qin Qianyu's words but said nothing.
After get off work, he returned home and stood by the
floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the cityscape. The image of Chu Qianmiao,
the face he had scolded that day, on the verge of tears, came to mind.
Standing by the window, he reflected on himself, wondering
if he had been too harsh that day.
Was his anger due to work, or was it mixed with personal
emotions?
He raised his hand and pounded his chest.
He felt as if he was losing control.
