Chapter 35.1: The Second Tears

Before getting out of the car, Ren Yan ordered Lei Zhenzi not to come to Litong Securities starting tomorrow. His excuse was: "You're messing with my mind."

Lei Zhenzi felt wronged. If an uninformed third party heard this, they might think they were gay, with Ren Yan the one who refused and him the one who went after him.

"Ren, tell me everything. What do you mean by 'I'm messing with your mind?' I was there, and someone was chatting and laughing with me. It's the person who's chatting and laughing who's messing with your mind, right?" Lei Zhenzi rolled down the car window, leaned out, and stretched his neck to shout at Ren Yan's resolute and cold back.

Ren Yan, too lazy to argue, stood still and turned away, offering a single reply: "Sooner or later, you'll die at my hands, from talking too much."

He turned back, swiped the access control panel, and entered the building. He could imagine the sly grin on Lei Zhenzi's face as he sat in his car. That guy always delighted in stirring up his emotions. But the problem was, he didn't want any emotions. For him, a simple life was the best state of mind.

He figured that as long as Lei Zhenzi stopped deliberately disrupting things, his mind would quickly return to its normal course, as if nothing had ever disturbed it.

Chu Qianmiao noticed that after Lei Zhenzi's guest appearance as the high-end client driving a beat-up BMW, he hadn't been around at Litong Securities for a while. Everyone reasonably speculated that Mr. Lei might be working on a big project and making a lot of money.

After New Year's Day, Chu Qianmiao had been thinking that if she ran into Lei Zhenzi, she would sincerely and warmly thank him once more. Thanks to his and Ren Yan's brilliant performance, Gu Miaoyu's performance had truly turned around at the end of the year. Not only had she escaped the threat of being eliminated from the bottom, she had also directly dethroned Tu Xiaorong and taken the top spot.

Now, whenever Gu Miaoyu mentioned the young comrade named Shao Yuan, she no longer uttered words like "little bastard" or "bastard." She now spoke of him with nothing but praise, overwhelming praise.

But Lei Zhenzi hadn't come to Litong. Chu Qianmiao figured, since she couldn't thank Taohuaxian, she might as well thank Ren Yan again with sincerity and enthusiasm. After all, he was in the lineup that day, so he deserved half the credit.

But somehow, Chu Qianmiao found herself unable to snag a chance to be alone with Ren Yan. She wasn't sure if she was sensitive—but she was usually quite sensitive, so it was rare for her to be sensitive. She wasn't sure if she was being sensitive in the right way, or if it was the right thing to do. She had always felt that something was a little strange about Ren Yan's attitude towards her. He seemed much colder than before.

Though he hadn't always been particularly warm to her before.

But now, he was even colder.

He ordered less Japanese takeout. When he worked late, he no longer let her use his Mercedes. Instead, he would have Qin Qianyu take her home in a taxi, and then he would take a taxi back home. He rarely set foot in the meeting room unless he was in a meeting. He would simply assign Qin Qianyu to anything via WeChat.

Chu Qianmiao carefully reflected on whether she hadn't done a job well enough, or had accidentally flattered someone, quietly offending Ren Yan without realizing it.

After a thorough investigation, she couldn't find any time when she had extended any offensive tentacles towards Ren Yan. So, she asked Qin Qianyu for his opinion: "Brother Qin, do you think your CEO Ren has been acting a little strange lately?"

Qin Qianyu raised an eyebrow and said, "Nonsense! This is his normal state. Like when he suddenly became so much more approachable a while ago, that was abnormal."

Chu Qianmiao: "???"

...Is that so?

All right. Chu Qianmiao thought, so this is Mr. Ren's normal state. So, his sudden indifference wasn't directed at her, and she didn't have to secretly reflect on herself.

That would have relieved her.

But lying in bed in the quiet of the night, before drifting off to sleep, she half-thought: Why did she care so much about his attitude?

After the Spring Festival, the weather warmed up, and the renovation of the Jialeyuan office building was complete. Chu Qianmiao and Qin Qianyu moved back in.

The entire building had been renovated and looked incredibly impressive. The due diligence office where Chu Qianmiao and the others were staying was still the same room, but the walls, floors, tables, and chairs were all completely new. There was even a long leather sofa against one side of the wall, large enough for a nap.

In the due diligence office, there had originally been a desk by the window, where Ren Yan sat when he arrived; Chu Qianmiao, Qin Qianyu, and the other four brokerage experts had shared workstations. Now, the shared workstations have been removed, replaced with solid wood desks and leather chairs. Qin Qianyu and Sun Yi's desks face each other, while Lu Zhonger and Wang Sian's desks face each other. Chu Qianmiao's desk, meanwhile, had been moved to the window, now facing the desk Ren Yan had occupied when he arrived.

When Chu Qianmiao first entered the brand-new due diligence office, even though Ren Yan wasn't there, the mere sight of her desk joining Ren Yan's made her heart beat faster. She didn't know if it was nervousness or something else.

Securities representative An Ruda, his stocky frame, came over to greet them and ask if they were satisfied with the new office.

Everyone quickly agreed.

Chu Qianmiao hesitated and asked a question that had been lingering in her mind: "Mr. An, my desk, stacked with Mr. Ren's... doesn't it look a bit awkward?"

An Ruda pulled a piece of paper from the tissue box on Qin Qianyu's desk, wiped the sweat from his nose, and explained, "Lawyer Chu, the thing is, that desk is actually for Attorney Zhang Teng. We originally wanted to set up another desk for you in this room, but after that, we had no room for the long sofa. The chairman thought about it and said we should keep the sofa so you can take turns resting at noon. Since Attorney Zhang usually has more meetings and less on-site work, we'll let you sit at the desk across from Mr. Ren for now. When Attorney Zhang arrives, we'll temporarily remove the sofa and bring in a desk."

After An Ruda's explanation, Chu Qianmiao felt that sitting across from Ren Yan made sense.

So, she calmed herself down and sat down.

She kept wondering if Ren Yan would come one day and sit across from her, with nothing blocking their view, and they could see each other just by looking up. Wouldn't that be a little awkward?

But this awkwardness simmered in her worries and fantasies for a week, and Ren Yan didn't even show up.

During lunch, Chu Qianmiao asked Qin Qianyu, "Brother Qin, what stage is your department's other project at?"

She asked in a roundabout way. She wanted to know if that project had already entered the application stage, thus taking up most of Ren Yan's attention.

Qin Qianyu popped a slice of cucumber into his mouth, savoring it like shark fin, and said, "That project is almost ready for application. Don't worry, President Ren will be back soon!"

Ren Yan's appearance two days later was unexpected. As soon as Chu Qianmiao entered the due diligence office that morning, she saw someone sitting at the desk across from her.

At that moment, she didn't know how to describe her feelings. A touch of surprise, a touch of joy, a touch of stage fright, and a touch of inexplicable shyness.

She walked quietly to the desk, as if afraid to startle anyone, and sat down across from Ren Yan with ease.

The room was air-conditioned, and Ren Yan still wore his woolen coat. A long scarf hung loosely from his neatly-knit coat, revealing a corner of his suit and white shirt. He lowered his eyes, staring at the data on his computer documents and paperwork. Chu Qianmiao looked up, only to notice his thick eyelashes, high nose bridge, and alluring thin lips. A slight frown etched between his brows, the expression he wore when pondering.

He bathed himself in the late winter morning light, a touch of coolness and gentleness, a touch of abstinence and allure.

Ren Yan, his brows lowered in the winter morning light, suddenly spoke.

"Chu Qianmiao."

"Here!" Chu Qianmiao wondered why she always responded to him in a perfunctory manner.

"Is there something on my face?" Ren Yan asked calmly, raising his head.

Chu Qianmiao burst into a smile. "Senior, you know what? Generally handsome men are nice to look at, but they're not worth looking at. Top-notch handsome men are worth looking at, but after looking at them too much, you lose sight of anything new. But exceptionally handsome men, truly, their handsome features are worth revisiting over and over again, because every time you look at them, you discover a new kind of handsomeness!" Chu Qianmiao flattered him without blinking. "Senior, you're exceptionally handsome! I can't help but want to revisit your handsome features!"

Ren Yan's lips twitched slightly, unsure whether to raise or lower them. Finally, he straightened his lips and said, "It's 9:01, office hours. What should you call me?"

Chu Qianmiao: "………………"

Her earlier surprise, joy, and stage fright and shyness were all thrown out the window.

Straight men don't deserve to share her emotions!!!
