Chapter
31.1: Restraint
A few days later, Chu Qianmiao heard about some personnel
changes within Jialeyuan.
After hearing about the meeting, Dong Lan was furious after
returning to the office because the legal director refused to take
responsibility and instead pushed issues onto subordinates, as well as Sui
Huan's poor professional skills, shirking responsibility, and disgraceful
performance.
Dong Lan subsequently stripped the legal director of his
title—he refused to accept the change and resigned on the spot. Dong Lan made
no effort to retain him.
As for Sui Huan, Dong Lan fired her without hesitation.
That wasn't the end of it. Dong Lan summoned the HR manager
to her office that same day and demanded an explanation. Sui Huan lacked both
competence and responsibility. The agency that blamed her was publicly slapped
in the face. It was Dong Lan who had brought shame upon herself. With such a
low profile, how could she have been hired into the company?
The HR manager trembled, explaining that during campus
recruitment, Ji Xia, the company's senior engineering executive, had approached
him and asked him to help recruit the girl. Ji Xia said the girl was a relative
of his, a well-behaved and quiet person with excellent grades. The HR manager
said he saw her transcript and, convinced she did indeed have good grades,
offered her a favor and hired her.
Dong Lan's question was: "I'm asking you, is Jia Leyuan
mine, or the executives'? Who's actually paying your salary? Is it me, the
chairman, or Ji Xia, the executive?"
The HR manager, nearly brought to his knees by the
questioning, quickly admitted his mistake.
Finally, under Dong Lan's piercing gaze, he raised three
fingers and swore before all the gods: He had absolutely never accepted any
favors from executive Ji Xia.
He was an old friend who had built his business alongside
Dong Lan. Dong Lan ultimately didn't touch him, but she issued a death order:
if anyone was found to have gained access through connections, they would be
killed without mercy.
This was what An Ruda, Jialeyuan's securities
representative, quietly told Chu Qianmiao and the others. An Ruda was in his
thirties, short, sweaty, and a bit talkative, but not annoying. He was usually
responsible for liaising with intermediaries, and over time, he'd become
familiar with everyone involved. He wouldn't hesitate to offer a few words,
whether necessary or not, while wiping his sweat.
Ren Yan was there when he spoke.
Chu Qianmiao, Qin Qianyu, and the other four listened with
awe and awe. Ren Yan remained impassive, his expression unfazed.
Originally, An Ruda only needed to inform Chu Qianmiao, Qin
Qianyu, and the others at the due diligence office that the company's personnel
situation had changed, that the corresponding documents for the functional
departments and their respective leaders needed to be updated, and that the
contact person for future legal matters would also need to be changed—that was
all he had to say.
But Dong Lan's overwhelming presence had shaken him so much
that he couldn't help but speak out.
"Speaking of our chairman, she's a true iron lady! No
matter how big and strong a man is, one glare from her will make him go weak in
the knees! Anyone who can make her laugh will eventually become an immortal! We
heard she has a son, and we all think that with such a powerful mother, he must
be as obedient as a lamb."
Chu Qianmiao smacked her lips in amazement. "President
Dong is truly an iron-fisted person. She doesn't give anyone face when dealing
with people. She truly has the aura of a Wu Zetian!"
An Ruda slapped his thigh and lowered his voice, as if a
louder voice might be heard by Dong Lan several floors away. "What a
coincidence! We actually call her Empress Dong behind her back!"
After An Ruda left, Chu Qianmiao couldn't help but sigh,
"Dong Lan is so strong-willed. Any woman who marries her son will probably
suffer!"
Qin Qianyu, a little dazed, praised her, "Qianmiao, you
have a really fast-paced mind!"
Chu Qianmiao chuckled and discussed with him, "Brother
Qin, do you think Dong Lan's personality is good? She won't make many friends
with that kind of personality. Those around her are probably more afraid of her
than they respect her."
Before Qin Qianyu could respond, Ren Yan's voice interrupted
their conversation.
"From Dong Lan's perspective, whether she has a good
personality that allows her to make friends isn't that important. What's
important is that she can control her subordinates."
Chu Qianmiao responded, turning back to look at Ren Yan's
desk.
He was sitting in the midday winter sun, wearing a black
suit, white shirt, and black tie. He looked a bit abstinent and cold, while the
sunlight bathing him seemed both brilliant and warm. He and the sunlight, in
their contrast of cold and warmth, achieved harmony, a delightful sight. Chu
Qianmiao couldn't help but squint.
He met her gaze as she turned to look back.
"Women need to make more of an effort to maintain the
same authority as men in the workplace. If she didn't have the iron-fisted
approach and style she has now, she wouldn't be able to control the male
executives under her." Ren Yan looked at Chu Qianmiao, expressionless, and
spoke in a straightforward manner.
Suddenly, he changed the subject: "For example, if you
reach a certain position in the future and want to control your subordinates,
you won't be able to rely solely on your current smile and ability to make
friends. A boss must have the authority of a boss."
Chu Qianmiao was stunned, not realizing that the topic had
been diverted to herself.
She followed up the conversation by asking, "Then, how
do you display authority? By... keeping a cold face?"
Ren Yan: "That's low-level authority."
Chu Qianmiao: "Then by having a blank expression, a
commanding presence without anger?"
Ren Yan: "That's medium-level authority."
Chu Qianmiao thought for a moment. "So, Dong Lan just
had medium-level authority?"
Ren Yan nodded calmly.
Chu Qianmiao couldn't help but feel curious. She pressed on,
"So, what is supreme authority?"
Ren Yan was surprisingly patient, answering, "You're
intimidating even when you're not angry. When you're truly angry, you smile
instead. When you smile, it scares others. That's supreme authority."
Wow.
Chu Qianmiao felt a little educated.
"But how do you smile to scare others?" Her humble
and eagerness to learn simply couldn't be stopped.
Qin Qianyu and his four companions stood by, restraining
her: "Qianmiao, shut up!"
Chu Qianmiao looked at Qin Qianyu. He was using his eyes to
tell her: Stop it, please! There's no point in provoking Mr. Ren's real-life
demonstration!
But it was too late...
When Chu Qianmiao turned back to look at Ren Yan, he was
already raising one corner of his mouth sinisterly.
"Your questions today are way over the top," he
said with a terrifying smile.
Chu Qianmiao nodded quickly, like a high-frequency garlic
pounder: "I understand! Mr. Ren, you're truly a living fossil with a
terrifying smile. Thank you for your hard work!"
This fake smile, tinged with sarcasm and mockery, was truly
frightening.
But Ren Yan wasn't finished yet: "It seems you still
have too much energy. Why don't we have a meeting tomorrow to discuss the
company's history and business situation? Today, compile a list of questions
and send it to me."
Chu Qianmiao: ...
Qin Qianyu and the other four: ...
After assigning the tasks, Ren Yan packed up and returned to
Litong Securities.
