Chapter 28.1: Kindness and Sharpness

For a while, Ren Yan didn't come to the project site very often.

Chu Qianmiao couldn't explain what was wrong with her. Whenever she saw Ren Yan, she'd always wanted to argue with him, finding him so annoying and wishing he'd disappear. But when he stopped coming, she felt like she had no place to argue, which was really frustrating.

She asked Qin Qianyu indirectly, "What's your boss been up to lately?"

Qin Qianyu immediately said, "Are you missing him?"

Chu Qianmiao's heart skipped a beat at the question. Just as she was about to righteously retort, "Nonsense!", Qin Qianyu interrupted.

He didn't give her a chance to speak, instead launching into a flood of emotion. "I'm just like you. I miss my leader, too! Qianmiao, there's something magical about our leader. When he's around, he doesn't always say nice things. Eight out of ten of his sentences are usually rhetorical questions with question marks, and the remaining two are usually just two words long: 'Shut up, get out!' But once he's not around anymore, you'll realize those rhetorical questions are all for your own good. And when you think about it, you can't help but miss him!"

Chu Qianmiao was stunned. She pondered, then felt that Qin Qianyu's description was actually quite accurate...

This made her a little worried that she really did have a masochistic gene in her!

Qin Qianyu, as if in sync with her, continued, "We sometimes feel like President Ren is a human bitch-stimulator, specifically designed to unleash the bitch-like instincts in those who spend time with him, turning us all into little bitches who can't stand being abused by him!"

Chu Qianmiao silently gave Qin Qianyu two thumbs-up. Someone so brazenly admitting to being a bitch is truly admirable.

Sun Yi, beside him, also got excited and joined Qin Qianyu's sighs, sharing his sympathy. "Our President Ren seems to have a special personality trait. If he slaps you in the face with a sarcastic rhetorical question, you might not remember it for long, but if he gives you a sweet treat afterward that helps you avoid mistakes, you'll definitely remember it forever!"

Chu Qianmiao concluded: this is a classic case of remembering the treat but not the punishment.

Lu Zhonger joined the discussion about Ren Yan's humanity. "Our department is the most united within our company's investment banking department, bar none! Mr. Ren is our leader, and we are willing to follow him, wishing him eternal blessings and longevity!"

Chu Qianmiao: "..."

Is it getting more and more like a cult the more he talks?

Wang Sian couldn't muster any slogans, but he used practical examples to vividly demonstrate to Chu Qianmiao how, despite Ren Yan's harsh rhetorical questions, he was a beloved figure in the hearts of everyone in the department.

"Our Mr. Ren has been simultaneously managing another project lately. He's been coming to our office every now and then, and our colleagues on the other project are quite unhappy about it. They directly called the four of us together to criticize us, saying, "What are you doing? We're all the boss's favorite subordinates, so why do you always cling to him? We want to be criticized, scolded, and questioned by him, too, don't we?"

Chu Qianmiao chuckled. She felt relieved. It wasn't just her own tendency to be masochistic, but everyone was. Once a phenomenon became widespread, it ceased to be a problem.

She felt reassured by her own indifferent attitude.

Jia Leyuan had many legal issues to sort out, and the head of the legal department had recently sent a subordinate to the due diligence office to work with Chu Qianmiao to sort them out.

The person the legal department had sent was a young woman named Sui Huan, a recent college graduate. She was shy but also humble, and would blush whenever Chu Qianmiao asked her questions. Chu Qianmiao couldn't help but feel a surge of maternal love when she saw Sui Huan blushing, even though she wasn't much older than Sui Huan, only a year or two apart.

The delicate little girl always aroused her protective and helpful instincts.

Sui Huan had only been working for less than six months and had little practical experience, so there were many aspects of the business she didn't understand. Sometimes, when she encountered problems with company contracts, Sui Huan would come to Chu Qianmiao for advice. She said her boss was too busy and too serious, and she was afraid to ask him for advice.

Originally, Chu Qianmiao's job was to sort out the company's legal flaws, and the questions Sui Huan asked were not within her scope. But she was busy enough with her duties, and she couldn't bear to see Sui Huan looking so pitiful, so whenever Sui Huan asked, she would teach her.

Sui Huan always blushed and said to Chu Qianmiao, "Thank you, Lawyer Chu! You make me feel like you treat me better than my sister!"

Chu Qianmiao patted her shoulder generously and said, "You're welcome."

After Sui Huan left, Qin Qianyu couldn't help but say to Chu Qianmiao, "Qianmiao, seriously, I've never met a more enthusiastic girl than you. You're truly a role model for young people to emulate Lei Feng!"

Chu Qianmiao quickly said, "Brother Qin, you're flattering me again. If you keep doing that, I'm going to have to adjust my walking posture. I'm going to be so arrogant, I tell you!"

Later, Sui Huan came to Chu Qianmiao to ask questions, and Ren Yan caught her twice. The next time, Sui Huan came to ask for her help reviewing a company lease contract. Jia Leyuan planned to rent a factory building in the South City Industrial Base to store home improvement materials. Sui Huan explained that the lease contract her supervisor had given her was a generic template, asking her to modify it repeatedly. But she didn't know how to do it. Chu Qianmiao was busy at the time and didn't help her with every detail of the contract, but she did kindly explain some key points.

After taking notes, Sui Huan told her that this was her first time taking full responsibility for a contract, and she felt a little nervous.

Chu Qianmiao encouraged her, telling her not to panic. The industrial base was under the jurisdiction of the district government, and if there were any problems dealing with them, life would be truly unbearable.

Sui Huan thanked her with a smile and returned to the Legal Department.

After Sui Huan left, Ren Yan called Chu Qianmiao over and asked, "What do you think you're doing here?"

Chu Qianmiao stared at Ren Yan's handsome face, which was tilted upwards towards her. It had been ages since she'd been bothered by his questions, and now, suddenly, she felt a sense of familiarity...

She tucked her hair behind her ears, considered for a moment, and replied, "I'm here to work on a project..."

Ren Yan nodded and said, "It's good that you know what you're here for. Remember, you're here to work on a project, not to unleash your humanity and emulate Lei Feng's desire to help others."

Chu Qianmiao was stunned for a moment, then realized he might be referring to her helping Sui Huan answer questions and resolve issues.

Having fallen into the trap of being "popular" before, Chu Qianmiao didn't dare to rashly refute Ren Yan completely this time. She cautiously argued, "Mr. Ren, it's true. Confucius once said, 'Helping others is a virtue.' When I had questions, Brother Qin and the others were so helpful..."

Ren Yan said coldly, "You and Qin Qianyu are both Party B. You and the employees of Jialeyuan, one representing Party A and the other representing Party B. Your interests are asymmetrical and your information is inconsistent. You only provide the services you receive from Party A. You don't need to do anything else. Don't add unnecessary layers."

Chu Qianmiao disagreed slightly with this statement. She felt Ren Yan's argument lacked humanity.
