Chapter
9.1: What's Most Terrifying
Chu Qianmiao wondered how to explain the word
"donkey" to Qin Qianyu.
How could she describe it to him? In her family's slang,
"donkey" means "to cheat"...
Chu Qianmiao replied to Qin Qianyu: "Donkey, in some
places, means 'to cheat.' He's cheating you."
Qin Qianyu: "So whoever cries is a donkey, meaning
whoever cries is a liar?"
Chu Qianmiao: "...You could understand it that
way."
Qin Qianyu: "Why is crying a donkey and a liar? Why not
just say whoever cries is a puppy?"
Chu Qianmiao: ... ...
Because she promised not to cry. If she went back on her
word and cried, wouldn't she be a liar?
But there was no reason for her to tell Qin Qianyu this...
"Just think of 'donkey' as meaning both a donkey and a
liar—it's a double entendre; 'puppy' can only be 'puppy'—it's too simple in
meaning!" she replied to Qin Qianyu.
During his afternoon break, Ren Yan went to the tea room. As
soon as he left, Qin Qianyu followed him like a tail.
When he returned to work, he messaged Chu Qianmiao on QQ
again.
Qin Qianyu: "Qianmiao, Qianmiao, I told Mr. Ren what I
meant by that sentence." Then his brow, which had been furrowed with
doubt, finally relaxed and he smiled at me.
Chu Qianmiao congratulated him on his successful flattery.
Qin Qianyu: "Listen to me! This isn't worth
congratulating! Our CEO Ren has a bad habit: whoever he smiles at is doomed to
suffer! So, whenever he smiled at me, I trembled immediately. And then he asked
me—"
Chu Qianmiao: "???"
How can investment bankers keep things secret and
suspenseful when chatting online?
Qin Qianyu then sent a crying emoji: "CEO Ren smiled at
me and asked me: You know the answer by asking Chu Qianmiao, right? Who told
you to ask? If you wanted to ask her, wouldn't I have asked it myself?"
Qin Qianyu's description was so vivid that Chu Qianmiao
could already picture it in her mind. She imagined Ren Yan grinning like a
scoundrel and asking Qin Qianyu, "Who told you to ask? If you wanted to
ask her, wouldn't I have asked it myself?" For some reason, she felt
like laughing.
Qin Qianyu: "Mr. Ren also told me to write the first
draft of the restructuring plan tonight! I don't know what you two were up to
in the tea room about the donkey, but I know I'm now your cannon fodder on this
'donkey' issue! I hate it!"
Chu Qianmiao suppressed a laugh and replied, "Don't be
sad. I'll help you with some of the restructuring plan."
Suddenly, she heard Qin Qianyu scream, "Ah!" He
even dropped the mouse in his hand.
She turned her head and almost screamed out herself.
Ren Yan was standing behind Qin Qianyu's seat, his head
hovering just above one shoulder, silently and obliviously watching Qin
Qianyu's computer screen.
"Does it feel good to chat during work hours?" Ren
Yan smiled sinisterly.
Qin Qianyu looked so anxious that he didn't know where to
start explaining.
"Leader, listen to me. Leaders are like this... Leaders
are like this. Why were you snooping through my computer? That's wrong..."
Ren Yan gave a somewhat affected "Oh."
"Looking through other people's computers is wrong? Then who was snooping
through mine this morning?"
Qin Qianyu trembled. The other three tried to remain
indifferent, their eyes fixed on their own computers, doing everything they
could to avoid any chance of being caught in the crossfire.
"You have time to chat, which means you have plenty of
time. Okay, then, I want to see the full draft of the restructuring plan
tomorrow morning," Ren Yan said with finality.
Chu Qianmiao saw that Qin Qianyu was about to collapse under
Ren Yan's pressure.
...She had never imagined that a donkey could cause such a
tragedy.

After returning home from get off work, Chu Qianmiao first
compiled the minutes of the day's meeting and emailed them to Zhang Teng, so
that he could understand the project's status and progress even when he wasn't
there.
Then she began working overtime to write the restructuring
plan. She had promised Qin Qianyu to help him with it, and she had to keep her
word. Even though Qin Qianyu said no, Ren Yanlin, before leaving get off work,
didn't know who he was addressing. He said, "While you're still young,
it's not a disadvantage to find more work for yourself. If you don't work hard
now, you'll have a hard time when you're old."
She felt that this simple statement held a profound wisdom.
It warned the lazy: if you indulge in laziness now, you'll be poor and old in
fifty years.
She didn't want to be poor and old. She wanted to be an
elegant, 80-year-old lady who could still wear Givenchy lambskin when she went
out for tea. So she had to work hard now!
She spent the entire night researching company information,
analyzing the company's situation, and writing documents. Her brain was so
active that she lost track of time.
She worked until after midnight. She emailed the completed
section to Qin Qianyu for a summary.
Qin Qianyu emailed her back: "Qianmiao, are you an
angel?! I think you're more like my colleague than those three!"
Chu Qianmiao yawned and smiled after reading the email, then
closed her computer. This intense night had left her feeling more fulfilled
than ever before.
The next day, Ren Yan visited the company again.
After reviewing the draft restructuring plan, he asked,
"Who wrote the section on the corporate governance structure and various
company systems for the restructured joint-stock company?"
Qin Qianyu pointed at Chu Qianmiao and said, "Lawyer
Chu."
Ren Yan's face remained expressionless, a blank expression
that made him seem enigmatic, yet it also made others nervous.
He then asked, "Who wrote the section on issues that
require attention during the restructuring and IPO process?"
Qin Qianyu pointed at Chu Qianmiao again and said,
"Lawyer Chu wrote the majority of it."
Ren Yan's face remained expressionless.
Chu Qianmiao was terribly nervous, her heart in her throat.
If Ren Yan didn't show some expression, she thought her heart would burst
through her throat and burst through her teeth.
"Well done," Ren Yan said succinctly after closing
the file.
Chu Qianmiao's heart sank back into her stomach, and she
almost wanted to clench her fists and roar to the heavens—
She was recognized! She had washed away the bad consequences
of her previous carelessness!
