Chapter 7.2: It Smells So Good
Chu Qianmiao was assigned to the brokerage firm's vacant
office. Besides Qin Qianyu, there were three other project members from the
brokerage firm: Sun Yi, Lu Zhonger, and Wang Sian, all young investment
bankers. Chu Qianmiao had met them twice before at meetings, but beyond
exchanging business cards and saying hello, they hadn't had time to engage in
much conversation. This was her first serious and responsible introduction to
them. Chu Qianmiao, with her outgoing personality and crisp voice, immediately struck
a chord with the three of them.
The four of them had just agreed to buy two decks of cards
and play a few rounds of poker during lunch break when Ren Yan entered the
room, his poker face on. Behind him, Qin Qianyu, his expression etched in his
lips, his dynamic facial muscles silently signaling, "You're doomed!
President Ren heard you talk about playing poker! There's still a lunch break
during due diligence?!"
Everyone instantly fell silent. Chu Qianmiao stole a glance
at Ren Yan's poker face before lowering her head. She thought to herself that
if she had a picture of him, playing cards wouldn't even need the big and small
ghost cards. He looked even more spooky than a ghost right now...
Ren Yan entered the office and sat down at the most imposing
mahogany desk. Without further ado, he clenched his fists, banged them twice on
the table.
"Meeting."
He announced the two words in a solemn voice.
The next moment, Chu Qianmiao felt as if she were witnessing
a massive indoor group calisthenics exercise.
Qin Qianyu, Sun Yi, Lu Zhonger, and Wang Sian—all four of
them stood in unison, as if they had undergone specialized training. Each
holding a laptop in one hand and a chair in the other, they swiftly turned and
gathered in a tight formation around Ren Yan's desk. They put down their
chairs, their laptops resting on their knees, and sat upright.
The entire process took less than five seconds, imbued with
a sense of ritual. The speed and punctuality were breathtaking.
"Lawyer Chu, please join the meeting."
Chu Qianmiao was stunned when Ren Yan spoke.
She quickly moved her laptop and chair over.
…At this point, she realized the negative consequences of
moving too slowly.
The four men chose seats as far away from Ren Yan as
possible, leaving her a gap next to him, where she couldn't avoid sitting.
Chu Qianmiao: "…"
Brothers at the brokerage firm, aren't you being too polite
to colleagues from friendly companies?!
Chu Qianmiao gritted her teeth and sat down.
She turned on her computer, and QQ silently chimed. It was
Qin Qianyu sending her a congratulatory message: "Qianmiao,
congratulations on getting the C-seat next to you!"
Chu Qianmiao: ...
Then another message: "I'm risking my life to give you
a heads-up. Be sure to be alert and extra careful. President Ren doesn't
tolerate any sloppiness when it comes to work. He's absolutely ruthless when
he's reviewing materials with everyone. Those closest to him are usually the
most likely to be questioned. Good luck!"
Chu Qianmiao: ...
Has she fallen into the trap of the brokerage firm? ?
***
Ren Yan led everyone through the materials. Chu Qianmiao
experienced high pressure for the first time. Ren Yan posed a question, and the
person responsible for the question had to respond quickly: Analyze the
company's history, why the problem exists, how to improve it, how long it will
take to resolve it, and whether it will affect the restructuring and IPO
process.
If the person's answer satisfied Ren Yan, the meeting
progress bar would move down rapidly. If Ren Yan wasn't satisfied, he'd pepper
him with questions, making people's hands tremble and their hearts tremble with
fear.
—Didn't you notice the problem here? Didn't you carefully
read the documents before?
—Since you've already noticed the problem, are you just
going to let it grow? Don't you need to think of a solution? Are you leaving it
for me to figure out? Then why did I hire you? To be my boss?
—Is this how you plan to solve this problem? It involves
more regulations than if you hadn't solved it yet? Did you hire someone to take
your professional qualification exam for you?
…
Chu Qianmiao felt more timid as she listened. She wanted to
shrink a little, to feel safer.
But she couldn't shrink herself, and Ren Yan's barrage
finally landed on her.
"Lawyer Chu, have you found any problems with the
company's qualifications?"
Ren Yan suddenly called out to Chu Qianmiao. Chu Qianmiao
watched the other four people sigh in relief.
She thought for a moment and replied to Ren Yan, "I
haven't found any issues yet."
Ren Yan turned and looked at her directly, making her hair
stand on end.
"No?" Ren Yan asked, raising an eyebrow.
... His aura was so strong, so strong that Chu Qianmiao
forgot for a moment that she was a lawyer, paid by and under the management of
the law firm. In that moment, she thought Ren Yan was her immediate superior.
"...No," she replied, swallowing.
Ren Yan glanced at her again, his expressionless face.
"Next, let's discuss the company's patent issues."
He straightened his head and pulled a document from a pile of pre-printed
documents on his desk. "The company has an important patent, currently
held in the names of three individuals. We need to transfer it to the company
as soon as possible."
As soon as he finished speaking, Chu Qianmiao felt like she
was struck by lightning. She felt the side of her body closest to Ren Yan both
hot and cold, and she imagined her face must have flushed red.
A company patent had such a glaring flaw, and she hadn't
noticed it.
She quickly reflected on why she'd made such a mistake.
—Yesterday, she'd been distracted while reviewing the
materials. Something about basketball games, mineral water and towels, and a
quarrel training class... her focus had been diverted.
—She'd assumed Zhang Teng would be primarily responsible for
today's meeting, and that she'd only be responsible for listening and taking
notes. So, subconsciously, she relaxed her expectations, figuring a quick
review of the materials would suffice, since Zhang Teng was in control and
providing a safety net.
"Lawyer Chu, did you misremember the meeting time and
miss the chance to review the materials?" Ren Yan added, his voice cold
and playful.
Chu Qianmiao lowered her head, feeling so ashamed she wanted
to slap herself to death.
She vowed never to make such a foolish mistake again, never
again.
