Water and Fire~Chapter 26.2: Heartbeat

Chapter 26.2: Heartbeat

As soon as she got home, she couldn't help but complain to Gu Miaoyu.

"Little Daogu, what's wrong with this guy? Can't he just give in to me? He always has to have the last word. I'm dying of suffocation! Ahhhh!"

"Did you say he grew up arguing with people? The king of arguing? Qin Qianyu and the others say he's calm, bullshit! How could a calm person be so argumentative and argumentative?"

"That scoundrel named Ren is a pervert! His brokerage firm has to work overtime at Litong this weekend to write a proposal. They can work overtime, but they insisted on dragging me along! If it weren't for the expensive and delicious overtime meals, I wouldn't have gone even if I were beaten to death!"

...

From one day on, Gu Miaoyu noticed that she was hearing the name "Ren Yan" from Chu Qianmiao quite often. An hour of animated complaints about Ren Yan every day seemed to have become a daily ritual for Chu Qianmiao after get off work.

Judging from Chu Qianmiao's various complaints, Gu Miaoyu's impression of Ren Yan was that he was a badass. He was arrogant, spent most of his time with a half-smile, a few moments with a sarcastic half-smile, was very sarcastic, and was very good at forcing people to work overtime. He was a real badass. And he was quite good-looking.

When Chu Qianmiao complained again that Ren Yan's criticism of her was irritating her to death, Gu Miaoyu couldn't help but say, "Shuishui, if he's irritating you, you can also criticize him! You can criticize him to death!"

Chu Qianmiao was stunned for a moment, then suddenly realized, "Yeah, why shouldn't I criticize him?!"

The next night, she returned home, looking dejected.

Gu Miaoyu asked her what happened.

She said she bravely confronted the bad guy Ren today.

"And then?" Gu Miaoyu asked curiously.

"And then he criticized me again! Ahhhh, he's so annoying!" Chu Qianmiao said, holding her head.

She recounted the events to Gu Miaoyu.

That day, she saw a mosquito in the office. Now that the weather was cooler, summer mosquitoes could survive into autumn, and the mosquito's tenacious fighting spirit touched her. So, she and Qin Qianyu and the others agreed to let it go, not crush it to death, but let it be. It would die naturally in a few days anyway.

In the afternoon, Ren Yan went to the due diligence site. The mosquito foolishly jumped in front of Ren Yan. Without a word, Ren Yan killed it with a tissue.

She felt a little melancholy at the time, and couldn't help but retort, "Everything has a soul, Mr. Ren. A mosquito is a living being, too. Why kill it?"

Ren Yan raised his eyelids and ignored her.

Later, while retrieving printed materials from the printer, her finger slipped and cut a hole in the paper.

She uttered a cry of pain.

Qin Qianyu came over and said, "Hurry out and buy some Band-Aids now. We can use them before the wound heals."

"..."

She wondered, how did the world create such a species of straight men? Shouldn't they be eliminated by the survival of the fittest?

Thankfully, Qin Qianyu was only straight in words. He got up and went to ask the company's securities representative if anyone had any Band-Aids. As luck would have it, no one had any.

Chu Qianmiao shook off the blood and simply waited for the cut to dry and solidify naturally.

She thought Qin Qianyu was already straight, but she hadn't expected Ren Yan to be even straighter.

He stood up and walked out. As he passed her, he asked, "Does it hurt?"

She was a little scared. Why was Ren Yan suddenly so kind and caring?

She quickly said, "It's just a small cut. It's okay. It doesn't hurt!"

In fact, it still hurt a little. Two large drops of blood had already come out.

Then Ren Yan said, "I was asking if the paper hurt."

"..."

She bravely retorted, "Why would it hurt?"

Ren Yan immediately retorted, "Everything is alive, so why shouldn't it hurt?"

"…………..." He silenced her with her words.

At that moment, she truly wanted to fight Ren Yan!

But he left right after he finished speaking. She silently gathered her murderous intent, planning to find a fight with him whenever he came back.

And then, when he came back, he passed by her... and dropped a Band-Aid on her desk.

It was as if he had lost something while passing by and had just happened to land on her. After throwing it away, he added, "It's been in the car for a long time. It might be about to expire, or it might have already expired. Feel free to use it."

"..."

She felt a mixture of emotions at the time. She wanted to thank him for helping her find the Band-Aid, but she also wanted to continue the fight...

"Ahhh, little Daogu, why am I so powerless? I'd let him destroy me with just one Band-Aid!"

Gu Miaoyu squinted at Chu Qianmiao and chuckled, "I suspect you'll develop feelings for your abuser as you're being abused!"

Chu Qianmiao was stunned for a moment, then lunged at her, strangling her with her arms and retorting, "Hahaha, stop talking nonsense! What are you talking about, you unlucky child!"

The next day at work, Chu Qianmiao looked over the list of materials. She discovered that several items required company documents, but the company hadn't yet provided them. The person she contacted was Wu Fang, a young woman who worked for the securities representative. She had gotten along very well with Chu Qianmiao from the beginning.

Despite their good relationship, Chu Qianmiao noticed that Wu Fang wasn't doing a very good job. She'd sent her the materials list long ago, but many still weren't in her possession. This wasn't the first time she'd urged Wu Fang, and she was incredibly friendly, chatting and joking with her, constantly saying she was too busy and promising to get the remaining materials as soon as possible.

But this "as soon as possible" was like the cuckoo's cry of tomorrow, never appearing.

Chu Qianmiao went to see Wu Fang again, and she was just as welcoming, holding her hand and chatting and joking. She said she'd remember, remember, and would definitely get the missing materials as soon as possible. She'd been so overwhelmed lately that she hadn't been able to keep up.

Chu Qianmiao was a little annoyed, but seeing the smiling face, she felt too embarrassed to reach out. She simply urged her again, "Hurry up, hurry up! Don't delay the project!"

Back at the office, Qin Qianyu and the others had gone out to get coffee, leaving only Ren Yan in the room. He arrived at noon, having just had a brief meeting with Dong Lan.

Seeing her looking a little downcast, Ren Yan asked what was wrong.

Chu Qianmiao told him that some materials hadn't been collected, and Wu Fang, the Securities Department's clerk, said she was too busy.

Ren Yan sneered, "What do you think the Securities Department's clerk is busy with? The Securities Department's main job is to cooperate with us. She doesn't have time to complete the work we assigned her. What is she busy with?"

Qian Miao was momentarily enlightened.

Ren Yan looked at her and added, "She says she's busy, but she's just too lazy to work. She thinks she's familiar with you, and since you have a good relationship, she can just put things off and give you the documents later, and you won't say anything." He paused, then began to lash out. "Do you still think being able to chat with everyone and making good friends is really a good thing?"

Chu Qian Miao felt as if she'd been hit on the head with a wooden club.

She expected Ren Yan to continue his taunts, so she steeled herself and braced herself for the blow.

Ren Yan then said, "Go find the agent later. He's Wu Fang's supervisor. Ask him directly for the materials and have him put pressure on Wu Fang. Remember next time: when you get to a project, don't rush to make friends with the people working on it. Maintain your authority first. That way, they'll listen to you and work efficiently and effectively. Start by warming up to them. When the time comes to work, you'll have lost your authority. They won't be afraid of you, and you won't be able to use them."

Chu Qianmiao listened and took note.

She pondered his words. She thought that although his words were never pleasant, they were always true.

"You're so talkative, you can strike up a conversation with anyone. Do you really think that's a good thing?"

She knew now; it wasn't.

She looked up at Ren Yan. He stood, half-leaning against his desk by the window, cup in hand, talking to her. The afternoon sun filtered through the window, illuminating his silhouette. Broad shoulders, narrow back, long legs—his impressive figure was hidden beneath his suit.

She looked at him and suddenly felt a little nauseous.

Why was her heart beating so fast? It was pounding. Just like when she'd met him at school.
